I have lived in Jellicoe Avenue since 1949. I to lived in a small row of cottages in Chapple Lane.It was near the Wickham gardens. The water tower is still there. We moved here and thought it was wonderfull. Roman Pavement was still having it's footpaths built. Our street was built in 1926. by a private contractor for private hire. I was told this building company went bust so sold the entire street to the council. I also remember that Hillside was a landfill site befor those houses where built. There where allotments going up towards the County hospital. We to played on the Willows and had many great days down there building dams in that stream. Fond memories indeed.

The first of the two developments which now comprise Tower Estate was completed in January 1939. My mother, father, brother and I moved in to 115, Tower Crescent when the house was new at that time. I was then only three so cannot remember much about that time. My mother often told me though that she thought she was in heaven after living in Westgate in one of the small block of cottages opposite the Strugglers. We now had elecricity, hot and cold water, a bathroom, a gas cooker and even a flush toilet just outside the back door. And many other "luxuries" which she had never had before. We spent the war years in that house and I well remember seeing and hearing the bombers leaving the nearby airfields on their way to bomb Germany. Unfortunately quite a lot of those brave young men never returned. Outer circle road was built by WW1 german POWs and the roads on Roman Pavement and East Liberty by WW2 german POWs. A roman floor was unearthed during this process. Hence the name Roman Pavement. I well remember us kids shouting "Achtung" at the prisoners, not having a clue what it meant of course. I suppose we thought it was a swear word. The prisoners used to laugh at us and I suppose they enjoyed a bit of banter. Of course they were only young lads themselves. However the Home Guard told us to clear off eventually. I remember so much about those days, the Morrison shelter in the front room, the steel flat top of which was ideal for doing jigsaws. Rationing, only 4 ounces of sweets a week. Well they called them sweets. No street lights. The trees and lamp posts had white lines painted round them, the kerb stones were also painted white for safety. We used to play on what we called "The Willows" which was open land to the east of Tower Estate, now a busy trading estate. It was a pretty area with a small stream running through. Our mothers warned us not to paddle in this stream as it contained all the lavatory water from the prison. Of course we all did paddle and I can't remember any fatalities. I can still recite the surnames of all of the residents from 97 to 117 odd numbers on Tower Crescent, so here goes. Strickson, Clifton, Banks, Reims, Mann, Pinner, Winfield, Gibbons, Gordon, Howsam, Hollingsworth. Happy days.
